The Island of Dr. Moreau (2014)

background

+ artist Statement

I grew up in a household that recycled and repurposed most everything. A household of tinkerers to say the least. We lived next door to my uncle's machine shop growing up, so I have always had a mechanical influence on what I build.

When my twins were in Elementary school. I was persuaded into getting involved with the technical aspects of school theater. This segued into a position of Technical Director and Design/ Build on shows with Synetic Theater for over 10 years. I designed and built shows with a water stage – King Arthur and The Tempest. I received Helen Hayes nominations for King Lear and Island of Dr. Moreau (pictured above). I built a sculpture for the Town of Vienna Liberty Amendments month celebration since 2021.

Working with metal comes naturally to me. As my creative world evolved it seemed the most logical to transform cold steel into a more natural and kinetic form. The idea of repurposing materials resonates with me and continues to bring me inspiration day after day. I like to add a touch of whimsy and hope that what I create brings a smile to the viewer.
